Mechanical Works Controller
Location: Whitehaven (Onsite)
Contract: 12+ Months

Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Works Controller to support the safe and effective delivery of construction activities within a highly regulated industrial environment.
This is a site-based role responsible for the management, control, and coordination of mechanical construction works, ensuring activities are delivered safely, compliantly, and in accordance with project requirements. The successful candidate will provide day-to-day oversight of construction operations, acting as the key interface between project teams, contractors, and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Construction Management & Compliance
- Manage and oversee mechanical construction activities in accordance with CDM regulations and site procedures.
- Ensure works are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project and regulatory requirements.
- Support construction management teams in the delivery of work scopes and programme objectives.
- Monitor contractor performance and adherence to approved work methods.
Safe Systems of Work
- Review and support the implementation of Safe Systems of Work (SSoW).
- Manage changes to approved work methods and ensure appropriate approvals are obtained.
- Deliver effective pre-job briefings and task start-up meetings.
Health, Safety & Quality
- Promote a strong safety culture across all site activities.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Report and investigate incidents, near misses, and safety observations.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship and quality assurance.
Programme Delivery
- Monitor progress against project schedules and milestones.
- Identify and mitigate risks that may impact delivery.
- Coordinate with engineering, planning, and project teams to resolve technical and operational issues.
- Provide regular updates on progress, performance, and emerging risks.
Resource & Competency Management
- Ensure personnel are suitably qualified, experienced, and authorised for assigned tasks.
- Support workforce planning and identify training or competency gaps where required.
Planning & Continuous Improvement
- Participate in constructability reviews, risk workshops, and planning meetings.
- Support lessons learned activities and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Contribute construction expertise during project planning and estimating activities.
Documentation & Handover
- Maintain accurate construction records and site documentation.
- Support quality records, traceability requirements, and project handover activities.
- Ensure documentation remains compliant and auditable throughout the project lifecycle.
Essential Qualifications
- IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent).
- NVQ Level 5 (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
- CSCS Black Card.
- Recognised Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Construction qualification.
Essential Experience
- Minimum 5 years' experience within a highly regulated industrial environment.
- Proven experience supervising and coordinating complex construction activities.
- Strong understanding of CDM regulations and construction safety management.
- Demonstrable mechanical engineering and construction knowledge.
- Experience managing contractors and multidisciplinary work teams.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
Desirable Experience
- Nuclear, defence, energy, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, or other high-hazard industry experience.
- Previous experience working within licensed or safety-critical environments.
- Knowledge of nuclear safety culture and regulatory compliance requirements.
Security Requirements
- Ability to obtain or hold Security Clearance (SC).
- Willingness to complete all mandatory site safety, security, and compliance training.
