RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Title: Principal EC&I Engineer
Job Type: Permanent
Locations: Glasgow, Sunderland or Derby
As a Principal EC&I Engineer, you’ll play a key role in delivering some of our most exciting and complex projects. You’ll provide technical leadership across Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) disciplines, supporting a diverse portfolio of high-impact programmes.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
-
Lead EC&I engineering delivery for complex systems and projects

Act as Lead Engineer on large-scale projects and support project planning

Chair design reviews and lead technical discussions

Prepare and present technical reports and presentations
Project Delivery & Governance
-
Ensure compliance with standards such as BS7671, IEC 61508, CDM Regulations & Machinery Directive
-
Prioritise and enforce Health, Safety & Environmental requirements
-
Support project cost, schedule, and quality delivery
-
Contribute to tenders, including technical and risk assessments
Team Leadership & Development-
Lead, mentor, and supervise engineering teams

Set objectives, monitor performance, and provide constructive feedback
-
Support collaboration across disciplines and stakeholders
-
Guide and develop junior engineers
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
-
Act as the technical interface between clients and internal teams
-
Support design reviews and resolve technical queries
-
Represent the business in technical communications
Continuous Improvement

Drive process improvements and efficiency initiatives
-
Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry best practices
-
Contribute to QMS procedures and compliance

Essential Requirements
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical, Control, or Instrumentation Engineering (or HNC/HND with significant experience)
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Membership with the IET (or working toward Chartered status)
Experience
-
10+ years in EC&I engineering within regulated industries

Strong expertise across EC&I disciplines, with specialism in at least two areas

Experience across full project lifecycle phases

Knowledge of control systems design (V-cycle, verification & validation)

Experience with configuration and documentation management
-
Proven collaboration with project management teams
Desirable Skills
-
Experience in nuclear or high-hazard industries
-
Knowledge of Safety Instrumented Systems & functional safety standards

Familiarity with ONR Licence Conditions

Experience with BIM-enabled projects
-
Electrical design, calculations & EMC assessment knowledge

Software, hardware, or embedded control systems experience
-
Understanding of HAZOP, HAZID, FMECA processes
-
Experience with obsolescence management
