Nuclear HVAC System Design Engineer

Overview

We are seeking a Nuclear HVAC System Design Engineer to lead the design and development of nuclear-grade HVAC and chilled water systems supporting safety-critical facilities within a highly regulated engineering environment.

This is a key technical role responsible for progressing system concepts through design maturation, ensuring solutions meet functional, environmental, safety, operational and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the development of complex infrastructure systems, contributing to the delivery of next-generation energy projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design development of nuclear-grade HVAC and chilled water systems from concept through detailed design.

  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, design substantiation reports and engineering justifications.

  • Ensure system designs comply with relevant industry codes, standards, regulatory requirements and best engineering practices.

  • Develop and support performance assessments, calculations and analyses to demonstrate system functionality and safety.

  • Identify, assess and resolve technical issues arising during design development.

  • Support the delivery of Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) objectives throughout the design lifecycle.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams including safety, structural, mechanical and operational stakeholders.

  • Interface with suppliers, contractors and external partners to support system development and integration.

  • Contribute to design reviews, technical governance activities and engineering assurance processes.

  • Ensure all engineering outputs are delivered to the required quality standards and programme milestones.

Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • Experience in the design and development of HVAC, ventilation or chilled water systems within a regulated engineering environment.

  • Strong understanding of engineering design principles, system integration and technical substantiation.

  • Experience producing technical reports, calculations and engineering documentation.

  • Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and engage with a broad range of stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of safety-led design methodologies and quality assurance processes.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve complex technical challenges.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within the nuclear sector or other highly regulated industries such as defence, power generation, oil & gas, rail or aerospace.

  • Familiarity with nuclear safety requirements, safety cases or licensing environments.

  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration.

  • Experience leading technical work packages or coordinating engineering activities.
