RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Overview
The Box Encapsulation Plant (BEP) is a major infrastructure project supporting the long-term clean-up of the Sellafield site. The facility will process and encapsulate legacy nuclear waste in concrete for safe storage, playing a critical role in a 100-year decommissioning programme.
The plant will primarily handle waste from the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo, alongside material from other legacy waste facilities. The project is being delivered through a joint venture to meet strict safety, regulatory, and stakeholder requirements.
Role Overview
An experienced Commissioning Engineer is required to support the delivery of commissioning activities on a major nuclear project. Reporting to the Commissioning Team Leader, you will be responsible for executing commissioning tasks safely and effectively, ensuring compliance with project processes and safety standards.
This role is specifically suited to candidates with experience in nuclear in-cell handler testing and mechanical systems commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute commissioning activities in line with approved strategies, procedures, and safety requirements
- Control, witness, record, and assess commissioning tests, particularly those impacting safety
- Deliver commissioning scope in a timely and cost-effective manner
- Review commissioning progress and performance, implementing corrective actions where required
- Ensure a proactive and balanced approach to safety (nuclear, radiological, conventional, and environmental)
- Liaise with project teams and stakeholders to obtain permits and coordinate activities
- Review and analyse commissioning test results, ensuring compliance with specifications
- Provide input into related project processes including design, HAZOP, risk assessments, and planning
- Support knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across the commissioning function
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Proven experience in nuclear mechanical systems commissioning
- Experience with in-cell handler testing within a nuclear environment
- Previous experience working on nuclear commissioning projects
- Strong understanding of commissioning processes and safety requirements
- Ability to produce and analyse calculations (e.g., using Excel)
- Good communication and coordination skills within multi-disciplinary teams
Qualifications & Certifications
- HNC/HND in Engineering (or equivalent)
- IOSH Managing Safely
- Relevant trade card
- Project management knowledge (APM membership desirable)
Security Requirements
- Ability to obtain BPSS clearance and P4 pass is essential
