RESPONSIBILITIES

A Principal Contractor Site Manager (PCSM) is required for a substation extension project located in Ashford, approximately 4 km south of Heathrow. This substation is nationally significant and critical to airport operations.

Project Overview

The project is currently in the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase. Ongoing works include surveying and investigation activities within a live substation environment. Future works will include:

  • Replacement of 4 SGT units

  • Extensive CV war cabling

  • General substation upgrades

  • Construction of a new Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) building (anticipated in approximately 18 months)

While the appointed Site Manager is unlikely to be directly involved in the construction of the GIS building, their input may be required during the design development stage.

Site investigation and other substation works are currently underway.

Role Requirement & Urgency

The requirement is urgent. At present, one individual is carrying out both the PCSM and engineering roles, which is not sustainable.

The initial requirement was from early January through to completion of ground investigation works in February. However, due to potential additional scope discussions, the role is now expected to continue:

  • Confirmed through March

  • Possibly extending to June

There is also an intention to train internal resources, which is expected to take a minimum of three months.

Working Arrangements

  • Monday to Friday

  • 8:00am – 5:00pm

  • 45 hours per week

  • £60 per hour (inside IR35)

  • Rate negotiable for the right candidate

Essential Certifications & Requirements

Candidates must hold the following in-date certifications:

  • National Grid Safety Instructions (NSI) 6 and 8 – Competent Person

  • Temporary Works Coordinator certification

  • CAT 1 & CAT 2 with Substation High Voltage (HV) module (for utility excavation)

  • Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

  • Safety, Health and Environmental (SHEA)

The successful candidate will also be required to complete an internal assessment (SR37), based on National Grid Supplier Requirement 137.

Candidates who have previous experience managing sites within National Grid environments, hold NSI 6 and 8 certification, and have conducted SR163 meetings should be well positioned to successfully complete the assessment.
