RESPONSIBILITIES
Westlakes Recruit are currently recruiting for a Remediation Design Engineer based in County Cork, Republic of Ireland. It can be based 3 weeks in UK / 1 week in Ireland; whilst in the UK candidates can be based at home or supported relocation to Ireland.

Role Purpose
This role offers a unique opportunity to lead the design and delivery of remediation solutions for contaminated brownfield and historic landfill sites, with a particular focus on a landmark project of national significance. The Remediation Design Engineer will be responsible for analysing site investigation data, developing remediation strategies and designs, and overseeing the procurement and management of contractors. Working closely with internal multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders, the role involves designing civil engineering solutions for complex contamination issues, including groundwater treatment and capping. Day-to-day activities are primarily office-based, with regular site visits and client engagement. The successful candidate will act as one of two assistant project managers, bringing civil engineering expertise to complement the contaminated land specialist, and will play a key role in shaping the technical direction and delivery of the remediation works.

Impact – What can be achieved in this role
In the short term, the engineer will take ownership of detailed remediation design tasks, contribute to feasibility studies and options appraisals, and begin coordinating with internal teams and external contractors. They will support procurement activities and contribute to stakeholder engagement, including presentations and briefings.

In the medium term, the role will expand to include full responsibility for remediation design delivery, including groundwater treatment systems and capping. The engineer will lead design coordination across disciplines such as drainage and mechanical engineering, ensuring integration and compliance with regulatory frameworks. They will also support contract negotiations and cost management with the client and other stakeholders.

In the longer term, the engineer will be recognised as a subject matter expert in remediation within the Ireland business, contributing to nationally significant projects and influencing best practice across the group. Ideally, the engineer will already be chartered, if not they will have the opportunity to progress towards chartership.

Scope of the role
This role is part of a high-profile, multidisciplinary project valued at €11 million, with the remediation component forming a substantial portion of the overall scope. The core team comprises five specialists, expanding to fifteen engineers and environmental scientists during peak design and integration phases. The project management team includes three to four professionals at the forefront of delivery. The successful candidate will collaborate with leading experts across contaminated land, drainage, mechanical engineering, and civil infrastructure.

Core Capability 1
Experience of Large-Scale Remediation Projects

The successful candidate must bring substantial experience in the delivery of complex remediation schemes, particularly those involving contaminated soils, groundwater, and surface water. This includes working on brownfield sites, historic landfills, and industrial locations with significant environmental challenges. Familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks, is essential, as is the ability to interpret site investigation data and translate findings into practical, compliant remediation strategies. This capability underpins the technical credibility required to lead remediation design on nationally significant projects.

Core Capability 2
Subject Matter Expertise in Remediation Design

This role demands deep technical knowledge of remediation technologies, whether chemical or biological, and the ability to design and implement bespoke treatment systems. The engineer will be expected to deliver the development of remediation strategies, including landfill capping and groundwater treatment, and act as the subject matter expert within the Ireland business. Their expertise will be critical in shaping the technical direction of the project and ensuring that solutions are both innovative and robust. The ability to produce and review feasibility studies and options appraisals is a key part of this capability.

Core Capability 3
Design Coordination Across Disciplines

The engineer must be adept at coordinating inputs from a wide range of disciplines, including drainage, mechanical engineering, and civil infrastructure. While drawings will be produced by drafting teams, the engineer must understand how systems interact and ensure that all elements of the design are fully integrated. This includes leading the design of remediation works while supporting the delivery of wider project components such as roads and drainage systems. Strong communication and organisational skills are essential to manage interfaces and ensure cohesive project outcomes.

Core Capability 4
Stakeholder Engagement and Management

Effective engagement with stakeholders is a central part of this role. The engineer will support communications with clients, regulators, local authorities, and community representatives, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Defence. They will contribute to internal briefings and external presentations, helping to build trust and transparency throughout the project lifecycle. The ability to negotiate costs, justify additional work, and support contract discussions is vital, alongside a collaborative approach to working with the wider communications and project management teams.

Core Capability 5
Contractor Procurement, Management, and Supervision

This capability involves leading the procurement process for remediation contractors, including the development of tender documentation, evaluation of bids, and negotiation of contract terms. Once appointed, the engineer will oversee contractor performance, ensuring that works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with design intent. They will be responsible for supervising remediation activities on site, managing quality assurance, and resolving technical issues as they arise. This hands-on involvement is critical to maintaining project momentum and achieving successful outcomes.
