We are currently recruiting for an experienced Principal Safety Case Consultant to join a leading organisation delivering some of the UK's most technically challenging nuclear projects.
This is an excellent opportunity to take a senior technical leadership role, influencing the development and delivery of safety cases across major nuclear programmes while supporting the growth of multidisciplinary engineering teams.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Principal Safety Case Consultant to provide technical leadership across the development and delivery of nuclear safety cases throughout the project lifecycle.
Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will play a key role in developing safety case strategies, managing complex technical assessments and ensuring compliance with UK nuclear regulatory requirements. This position offers the opportunity to work on nationally significant projects while mentoring engineers and shaping best practice across the business.
With flexible hybrid working available, this role can be based from Warrington, Leicester or Bristol.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Case Leadership
- Lead the development and delivery of nuclear safety cases across all stages of the project lifecycle.
- Develop safety case strategies that support design development, project delivery and regulatory compliance.
- Produce and review high-quality safety case documentation, including Preliminary Safety Reports (PSRs), Pre-Construction Safety Reports (PCSRs) and equivalent technical submissions.
- Ensure safety case activities are delivered in accordance with company procedures, regulatory expectations and industry best practice.
Hazard Management
- Lead and facilitate HAZID and HAZOP workshops.
- Develop and maintain Hazard Management Strategies for complex nuclear projects.
- Coordinate hazard identification, assessment and mitigation activities throughout project delivery.
- Ensure hazards are effectively managed and appropriately documented within safety case submissions.
Technical Assurance
- Provide expert technical advice on nuclear safety, engineering substantiation and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee the preparation and review of supporting technical reports, calculations and engineering assessments.
- Support multidisciplinary engineering teams by ensuring safety requirements are integrated into design solutions.
- Promote technical excellence and continuous improvement across safety case delivery.
Project & Team Management
- Lead and manage safety case delivery teams across multiple projects.
- Coordinate activities with engineering disciplines, project managers and supply chain partners.
- Monitor programme performance, resource requirements, project costs and technical deliverables.
- Support business planning and contribute to successful project delivery.
Mentoring & Professional Development
- Mentor and coach Safety Case Consultants and junior engineers.
- Support the development of technical capability across the wider team.
- Promote knowledge sharing, collaboration and professional development.
- Encourage a positive safety culture and engineering excellence.
Essential Requirements
- Significant experience delivering nuclear safety cases across a range of nuclear projects and facilities.
- Strong understanding of the nuclear project lifecycle and the integration of engineering disciplines into safety case development.
- Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Knowledge of UK nuclear regulatory requirements and safety case methodologies.
- Experience leading HAZID, HAZOP and hazard management activities.
- Excellent technical writing, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience managing technical teams, programmes and project deliverables.
- Previous mentoring or coaching experience, supporting the development of engineering professionals.
Desirable Experience
Experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Criticality assessment
- Shielding and radiation dose assessment
- Human Factors
- Environmental assessment
- Nuclear safety analysis
- Probabilistic and deterministic safety assessment
- Engineering substantiation
- Safety case governance and regulatory engagement
Qualifications
- Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Engineering, Physics or another relevant scientific discipline.
- Chartered Engineer or Chartered Scientist status is desirable, or actively working towards professional registration with a recognised institution.
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of this role, successful applicants must be eligible to obtain and maintain UK Security Check (SC) clearance.
