RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide technical expertise across the full lifecycle of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems within a highly regulated, safety-critical engineering environment. The role covers delivery of complete UPS system designs, including system architecture, sub-system development, equipment specification, equipment selection, integration, verification, and validation activities.

Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will apply a structured systems engineering approach to develop robust and compliant critical power solutions from concept through to final verified design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate high-level plant and operational requirements into detailed technical specifications for UPS and associated electrical power systems.
  • Collaborate with process, mechanical, controls, safety, and electrical engineering disciplines to develop integrated system solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership and engineering guidance for UPS system design activities.
  • Develop and assess system architectures, equipment specifications, and design substantiation documentation.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable international standards and regulatory requirements, including IEC 63046, IEC 61225, and IAEA SSG-34 guidance.
  • Produce verification and validation strategies, including inspection, testing, commissioning, and acceptance plans.
  • Support lifecycle engineering activities covering design, procurement, installation, operation, maintenance, and future upgrades.
  • Contribute to safety case development and technical interactions with regulators, independent assessors, and external stakeholders.
  • Support supplier and contract partner management activities, acting as an intelligent customer where required.
  • Provide mentoring and technical support to junior and developing engineers.

Experience & Skills Required

  • Strong background in UPS systems, critical power infrastructure, or industrial electrical power systems.
  • Experience delivering systems engineering activities within regulated or safety-critical industries.
  • Understanding of electrical system integration, power continuity, battery systems, and equipment qualification processes.
  • Familiarity with verification, validation, and requirements management methodologies.
  • Knowledge of relevant IEC and international engineering standards.
  • Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Experience supporting safety case or regulatory compliance activities is desirable.
  • Previous experience managing suppliers, contractors, or technical work packages would be advantageous.
  • Experience within nuclear, defence, aerospace, rail, automotive, oil & gas, or similarly regulated sectors is beneficial.

Additional Information

  • Role involves working across the full lifecycle of safety-classified and non-classified UPS systems.
  • Opportunity to act as a responsible designer and technical authority depending on project scope.
  • Responsibility for delivery of defined engineering work packages and programme milestones.
  • May involve oversight of external engineering partners and technical review activities.
  • Opportunity to coach and mentor less experienced engineers while supporting wider engineering capability development.
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements may be available depending on project requirements and site access needs.
