How an apprenticeship shaped my career

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, I find myself reflecting on my own journey—from an eager(ish) apprentice at Balfour Beatty to Managing Director of Westlakes Recruit.

My Apprenticeship Journey

Like many school leavers, I faced the daunting question: university or work? For me, the answer was a lot easier than for many others — my community, family and close network had all followed a similar path - hands-on experience, real-world skills, and a route that would allow me to earn while I learned. My apprenticeship with Balfour Beatty, then known as Balfour Kilpatrick, gave me exactly that. I was immersed in a dynamic environment, working alongside experienced professionals who not only shared their expertise but also instilled in me the values of hard work, problem-solving, and resilience.

The practical knowledge I gained during my apprenticeship provided a solid foundation for my career. It wasn’t just about acquiring technical skills; it was about developing confidence, teamwork, and a strong work ethic. Most importantly, it opened doors. It allowed me to progress, take on new responsibilities, and ultimately carve out a career path that led me to where I am today.

Why Apprenticeships Matter

There is often a misconception that apprenticeships are a secondary option to university. The reality for me is quite different. Apprenticeships offer a direct route into industries, such as the nuclear sector, that are resource constrained and in need of skilled talent. They provide young professionals

with a head start, equipping them with experience and qualifications that employers value highly.

At Westlakes Recruit, we work with some of the most forward-thinking companies in the UK, and time and time again, we see how apprenticeships create real opportunities for individuals and businesses alike. Apprenticeships help bridge the skills gap, foster innovation, and drive economic growth. More importantly, they empower individuals to take control of their careers from an early stage.

My Advice to Aspiring Apprentices

If you’re considering an apprenticeship, my advice is simple: go for it. Be curious, be proactive, and embrace every challenge as a learning opportunity. An apprenticeship is not just about gaining technical knowledge—it’s about developing the mindset and adaptability needed for long-term career success. For employers, investing in apprenticeships is an investment in the future. The talent pipeline starts here, and by nurturing apprentices, we build stronger, more innovative industries. As someone who started their career as an apprentice and now leads a business, I can say with certainty that apprenticeships are life-changing. They provide a gateway to fulfilling careers, open doors to new opportunities, and help shape the leaders of tomorrow. I am such a big advocate for apprenticeships, so here’s to celebrating their positive impact — this week and beyond!
