Mechanical Design Engineer

RESPONSIBILITIES

Westlakes Recruit are currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the delivery of high-quality mechanical design solutions across a range of complex engineering projects. This role is suitable for engineers who can operate effectively in regulated and technically demanding environments, with assignments varying depending on project needs.

Role Overview

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for producing safe, compliant, and efficient mechanical designs in accordance with applicable legislation, standards, and engineering best practice. The role involves working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams to ensure design intent is maintained throughout the full engineering lifecycle.

Key Accountabilities

Deliver mechanical designs that meet defined safety, performance, and functional requirements

Maintain a strong understanding of relevant legislation, codes, and engineering standards

Apply engineering judgement to ensure designs comply with statutory and project requirements

Promote high standards in environment, safety, health, security, and quality

Contribute positively as a collaborative and reliable team member

Key Responsibilities

Produce mechanical engineering designs across the full engineering lifecycle to a high technical standard

Ensure design intent is maintained throughout development, review, and implementation

Interface with other engineering disciplines to support integrated design solutions

Ensure compliance with assurance processes and statutory Environment, Safety, Health & Quality (ESH&Q) requirements

Apply engineering standards proportionately and in line with recognised best practice

Identify, manage, and escalate technical risks or areas of concern to senior engineers or discipline leads

Qualifications

Essential: ONC / OND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline

Desirable: HNC / HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline

Professional Memberships

Essential: Membership of a recognised engineering institution at EngTech level

Skills & Experience

Essential Skills

Working knowledge of legislation and standards applicable to mechanical engineering design

Competent in standard office software and relevant engineering tools and applications

Desirable Skills

Knowledge of legislation and standards associated with regulated or safety-critical environments

Essential Experience

Experience producing mechanical designs as part of a multi-disciplinary design team

Desirable Experience

Experience working within complex or regulated engineering environments

Additional Requirements

Ability to work independently and manage own workload

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Flexible and adaptable approach to varying project requirements
