Principal Civil & Structural Engineer – LiftingSector: Engineering / High-Hazard

Westlakes Recruit are currently recruiting for an experienced Principal Civil & Structural Engineer to join a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting complex industrial projects.
This is a senior technical role with a strong focus on lifting engineering, structural design and technical assurance. The successful candidate will act as a Subject Matter Expert in lifting operations, providing technical leadership across projects and supporting the safe delivery of complex lifting activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership across Civil & Structural and Lifting Engineering.
- Act as a Subject Matter Expert for lifting operations.
- Prepare, review and approve Lift Plans and Lifting Risk Assessments.
- Carry out structural steelwork design and analysis for lifting and permanent works.
- Design lifting lugs, trunnions, lifting beams and spreader beams.
- Assess lifting points and supporting steelwork for structural integrity.
- Calculate centres of gravity and determine appropriate lifting methodologies.
- Specify hoisting systems, including wire rope and winch arrangements.
- Support complex lifting activities including:
- tailing operations
- horizontal-to-vertical lifts
- fleeting
- cross-hauling
- Select appropriate lifting equipment and lifting accessories.
- Provide technical support and guidance on lifting engineering matters across the business.
- Ensure compliance with LOLER, PUWER, HASAWA and relevant British Standards.
- Support technical assurance activities, audits and incident investigations.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and key stakeholders.
- Mentor and develop engineers, supporting competency and succession planning.
- Deputise for the Lead Engineer when required.
- Perform the role of Technical Authority for Lifting where applicable.
- Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering, or equivalent.
- Chartered Engineer status or recognised equivalent.
- Minimum 10 years’ relevant post-graduate or industry experience.
- Appointed Person qualification for Lifting Operations in accordance with BS 7121.
- Appointed Person – Moving Loads qualification.
- Extensive knowledge and application of LOLER and PUWER.
- Strong structural steelwork design and analysis experience.
- Detailed knowledge of Health & Safety at Work legislation.
- Experience preparing Lift Plans and Lifting Risk Assessments.
- Strong knowledge of British and other relevant lifting standards.
- Experience selecting lifting equipment and lifting accessories.
- Strong understanding of mobile crane operations and complex lifting methodologies.
- Strong communication, leadership and stakeholder-management capability.
- Experience mentoring and developing engineering personnel.
- Proactive and safety-focused approach.
- OPITO Approved LOLER Competent Person Assessment.
This is an opportunity to take on a technically influential role with responsibility for complex lifting engineering, structural assessment and technical assurance.
The role would suit an experienced Principal Civil & Structural Engineer, Lifting Engineer, Structural Engineer or Technical Authority with a strong background in complex lifting operations and structural steelwork.
